Highway Hazards
March 7th, 2007
On the Borivali-Dahisar stretch of the Western Express Highway, construction work has created dangerous conditions for pedestrians.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has taken up the project of highway widening. This has been going on since 2005 and now the deadline is May 2007. Until they complete their work, pedestrians including school students are put at high risk and delay for a stretch of about two kilometres near the Western Express Highway (from the National Park flyover to Dahisar Check Naka). They are left with less opportunity to cross this busy road.
The road being a highway was already busy and messy and now to add to the mess, highway widening, drainage and subway work are underway all at the same time causing lots of inconvenience, risk and delay to the residents of the areas when moving around or crossing the road.
According to citizens residing near highway, “They must feel highly regretful for the mess they have created for the pedestrians, especially for the schoolchildren who are left in danger. This is all because of poor planning. If they had planned well, this would not have been the case.”
While MMRDA says that they are aware of the inconvenience but they are helpless about the situation. “We are widening the highway and also building a subway to connect the Western Express Highway and SV Road,” said the site officer at the spot. Speaking about the inconveniences he said, “I know there is lot of mess but we are helpless. We are working to give more facilities to the public so people are bound to bear with the inconvenience. Once the work is complete, it will become the lowest-risk zone. The roads are being raised from ground level so the highway traffic will not remain at ground level and the subway will be made which can be used by vehicles as well as pedestrians who want to reach SV Road.” He further stated that all the work on this road will be completed by May this year.
