Traffic control goes Wi-Fi

April 13th, 2007

Bangalore: Motorists on the everbusy and chaotic Hosur and Airport Roads can expect better traffic management from Friday. Vehicular movement and traffic congestion will be under constant electronic surveillance with the police installing five video cameras in prime locations on these two roads.
These cameras will be linked to traffic-monitoring CCTV cameras at Public Utility Buildings on M G Road through Wi-Fi network.

Policemen sitting at this traffic command and management centre will go through the video footage and give necessary instructions to clear any congestion and ensure smooth flow of traffic.

This centre will be inaugurated on Friday by DGP K Srinivasan. Funds to procure these cameras and set up the command centre have been granted under B-Trac project during the 2005-2006 state budget.

The command centre will be set up on a temporary basis in PU Buildings. A permanent centre will come up on Infantry Road — where offices of the DCP and traffic (east) are located at present.

This building will be demolished and a high-rise will come up in its place to house the command centre and offices of senior officers handling traffic.

Police tried implementing a CCTV system on a pilot basis near Coffee Board junction and Manipal junction on Airport Road for two years.

Following this, police have decided to install a permanent system now, a senior officer said. Apart from clearing congestions, police can use CCTV footage to identify erring motorists also.

“Culprits caught violating traffic rules will be sent challans through automation units. They have to pay fines,’’ the officer added.
