11 killed in mishap in central India

NEW DELHI, April 18 (Xinhua) — At least 11 people were killed and five others sustained injuries after the van in which they were traveling collided head-on with a truck near Ujjain town in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh Saturday, a senior police official said.

“All the people were traveling in the van which was carrying newspapers. The vehicle collided with the truck which was traveling at a high speed at Ghatiya on the Agra-Mumbai Highway. The driver of the truck has fled the spot,” the official told the media.

All the injured have been admitted to a local hospital and are said to be out of danger.

“Police are investigating the exact cause of the accident,” he said.

The road accident rate in India is among the highest in the world.
