Indian police to use mobile technology for traffic management

April 29th, 2009

Bangalore: Police officers in India are turning to mobile technology in order to manage traffic congestion in Bangalore.

Motorists could soon be able to receive SMS updates about road conditions and request information on where parking spaces are available.

It is hoped that this strategy could improve the flow of traffic in the city and prevent what the Times of India described as parking chaos.

Meanwhile, mobile phones could be tracked in a traffic scan which will allow authorities to determine how fast on average drivers are travelling.

This system could also be used to work out the level of congestion on Bangalore’s major roads, with these detailed being texted to road users.

According to the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations, mobile phones have become an important driver of economic growth in the country.

The organisation carried out a study which found that states with the highest proportion of mobile phone users tend to enjoy higher annual growth rates.
