14 killed in 2 accidents in Himachal

Shimla/Kangra: 14 persons were killed and 23 injured in two separate accidents in the state today. Seven persons were killed and 22 injured when a private bus rolled down the road near Maryog on the Solan-Rajgarh road on the border of Solan and Sirmaur districts around 1.30 am today.

Eyewitnesses said the driver of the bus (HP- 64-6001) lost control on the vehicle after it hit a parapet. While five persons were killed on the spot, two succumbed to injuries at the district hospital. The bus was on way from Solan to Shivpur.

The deceased were identified as Inderjit (23), Pushpender (22), Rukmani (55) and her daughter Pushpender Lata (23) of Nauradhar, Butinath (55) of Oili and Satyanand (54) of Swan village and Poonam.

While one seriously injured has been referred to the IGMC, Shimla, 21 have been admitted to the district hospital at Solan.

Some passengers alleged the driver (Joginder Singh) and the conductor (Manraj) had consumed liquor at Solan bus stand before embarking on the journey.

In Kangra, seven persons, including three schoolchildren, were killed when the Alto car that they were travelling in rolled down into a 500-foot-deep gorge on the Old Kangra-Nandrul road this afternoon. Four adults and four schoolchildren were on their way to Nandrul in the car (HP 40 A 3645).

Capt Harnam Singh (60), former pradhan of Nandrul who was driving the car, Om Prakash (58), Zulfi and Chanchala Devi (55), all residents of Nandrul village, were killed on the spot, while Sarika, class II student of GAV Public School, died on way to the Kangra Civil Hospital.

Kangra SMO Satish Sharma said Sarika was brought dead to the hospital, whereas Anjli, Sahil Choudary and Ankit, all between 8 and 11 years of age and students of the same school, were referred to Dr RP Government Medical College, Tanda, for treatment. Ankit and Sahil succumbed to their injuries there.
