NEW DELHI, May 3 (Xinhua) — Eight people were killed and 25 others sustained serious injuries when a truck in which they were traveling plunged Sunday morning into a gorge at Champaghat, 300 km from Bhubaneswar, the capital of the eastern Indian state of Orissa, said police.

“The mishap took place when the truck which was traveling at a high speed fell into the 200-meter gorge failing to negotiate a bend. The vehicle was carrying a wedding party of some 40 people to a nearby village,” the official said.

The victims were immediately rushed to a local hospital, where eight were declared dead on the road while others were being treated with injuries. Road accident rate in India is among the highest in the world.

In a recent accident, eight people were killed and five others injured last Wednesday when a vehicle they were traveling in skidded off the road and fell into a gorge in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.
