25 killed, 54 injured as bus falls into gorge in J&K

JAMMU: Twenty-five people were killed and 54 others injured when a passenger bus skidded off the Jammu-Katra highway and fell into a gorge at Panthal, 40 km from here, police said.

The passenger bus, on its way to Udhampur from Katra town rolled down into the gorge after the driver lost control over the vehicle, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Katra, Jugal Kishore said.

He said 25 persons were killed on the spot and their bodies have been recovered.

As many as 54 persons have been injured and they have been shifted to Katra hospital and of them, 34 critical passengers have been shifted to GMC hospital here and five to Command hospital, Udhampur.

Most of those who died were locals, including some government employees who were on their way to join duties in Udhampur.

As many as 17 bodies have been identified, they said. Jammu&Kashmir government announced an ex gratia of Rs 25,000 each to the next of the kin of the deceased and Rs 5,000 to the injured.

State deputy chief minister Tara Chand and industries minister visited the spot and met injured at the hospitals.
