Traffic police nakas near slums
June 24th, 2009
CHANDIGARH: Observing that slums of the city are untouched by enforcement of traffic norms, traffic police authorities have started laying special nakas at all entry and exit points of slums.
A senior traffic official said nakas were laid on every weekend under supervision of traffic sleuths and on June 21, as many as 150 challans were issued at these nakas. Special nakas were laid near Dadumajra Colony, Colony number-5, Mauli Jagran, Indira Colony and Colony-4.
SP (traffic) Hardeep Singh Doon said this is the first time they had started laying nakas around slums. “In a recent survey, we observed that traffic violations are high near slums and villages, and the maximum road accidents occur near colonies due to traffic violations,” the SP (traffic) added.
According to information, traffic police have selected around a dozen colonies and villages situated inside and near the city for this special weekend drive. The patrolling is being done in two shifts- from 8 am to 10 am and from 4 pm to 6 pm on weekends.
The weekend nakas are being laid near all slums on rotation and on every weekend, five places including colonies and villages are covered by traffic cops.
A traffic police official said triple-riding and riding without helmet on are a couple of violations reported in large numbers in colonies and villages. He added that violations by those driving four-wheelers including cars and gypsies are less in these areas.
Traffic police officials said the department has made an effort to cover all sectors and urban areas of the city with a view to maintain strict control on traffic and these were the colonies and villages which were hitherto left untouched by traffic department.
