September 3rd, 2009

A bus has fallen in a deep valley on a mountainous highway in Himachal Pradesh state in northern India, taking the lives of 23 people.

There were 40 people onboard the bus when it crashed into the ravine on Tuesday while passing a bend in the road in the district of Mandi — 140 kilometers (87 miles) from the state capital Shimla.

“The death toll is 23 and eight are injured, of which three are in critical condition,” local police chief Sonal Agnihotri told AFP.

In April, a bus skidded off Pathankot-Jammu National Highway at Kathua, some 70 kilometers (43 miles) south of Jammu, leaving more than a score of passengers injured.
