8 students hurt in mishap

New Delhi: Eight students of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Rohini (Sector-8) were injured when a speeding Qualis rammed the Maruti van in which they were going to school on Tuesday.

Of the 10 students — mostly from sectors 24 and 25 in Rohini — travelling in the van, Ginni Dua (12) and Akshay Kumar (14) fractured their collar bones while Tamanna Kumar (14), Bhavika Mamtani (13), Rishav Dua (10), Akshay (12), Anjali (13) and Arzoo (13), and the van’s driver Ravi (21) received minor injuries. Shubham Khatri (10) and Rosy (7) escaped unhurt.

‘‘Ginni and Akshay have fractured their collar bones while others have received minor injuries on limbs, back and forehead. We have given them the necessary medical treatment and discharged them around 9.30 am,’’ said Dr Mukesh Yadav, chief medical officer of Dr BR Ambedkar hospital, where the students were admitted.

‘‘As soon as the van carrying 10 of us from Sector 25 took a turn towards Sector 24 at around 6.45 am, a speeding Qualis coming from Rithala rammed into it. Due to the impact, our van toppled twice and its CNG cylinder fitted in the rear side came off and hit a 35-year-old woman Bhagirathi,’’ said Bhavika, a student of Class IX. Bhavika’s brother Akshay also received minor injuries. A passerby Munna Lal came to the rescue of the kids. He stopped a school bus crossing the accident site and got these students and Bhagirathi admitted to Ambedkar hospital.

‘‘Both the van and Qualis, which belongs to a travel agency, have been kept at Budh Vihar police post under Sultanpuri police station. The driver of the Qualis fled the spot but he was arrested late on Tuesday evening,’’ said Manish Aggarwal, deputy commissioner of police (north west).

Though none of the kids were severely injured, worried parents are now hesitant to send their kids in private vans. ‘‘Travelling in these vans is risky but we don’t have any other option as the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) has no provision for school buses. Earlier, the school used to operate from a different school building in Sector 25. We used to drop the children as it was close to our homes. But last year they shifted operations to another building in Sector eight.

Therefore, we have to depend on vans now as the school doesn’t make travel arrangements for its students,’’ said Devender Dua, Ginni’s father.

Agrees Vina Dagar, aunt of Shubham: ‘‘Fortunately, Shubham jumped off the window of the van and escaped. But we cannot take this risk every day and school should take up the issue seriously and provide bus services for the kids.’’

The accident brings back the memories of an earlier mishap in which two KV students — Sachin and Sunny — died after a speeding Tata Sumo collided with their Maruti van in November last year. Both the brothers were students of KV, Lawrence Road.

Despite such incidents taking place in quick succession, KVS joint commissioner Pragya Srivastava said: ‘‘We are sympathetic to the injured kids and their families but it is a policy decision not to provide bus service. We are fully dependent on resources from the Centre and cannot afford to maintain a separate transport system for the purpose.’’

Mob sets bus on fire after it runs over teen in Preet Vihar

Add comment April 19th, 2007

New Delhi: Despite the traffic police stepping up prosecution of Blueline buses after the recent high court order, the killer Blueline claimed yet another life in the Capital on Wednesday morning. The victim this time was 19-year-old Prince Sadana, a resident of Aaram Park in east Delhi.

His father died two years ago and Prince was the sole bread-earner of his family. He had been taking care of his mother and younger brother.

Prince was run over by a Blueline bus in front of Sai Baba Temple in Preet Vihar around 9.30 am. He had left home on his motorcycle to go to office when he stopped at the nearby temple to offer prayers. As he parked his bike and was about to enter the temple, the bus — on route number 350 — hit Prince while trying to overtake another bus from the wrong side, said eyewitnesses. He died on the spot.

The bus was stopped by a mob which gathered at the spot and doused the bus with petrol and set it ablaze. According to the police, the angry mob even stoned a fire brigade which arrived at the spot to douse the flames. The windscreen of the tender was broken in the melee.

The police was informed around 10 55 am, after which the body was sent to the Sabzi Mandi Mortuary for postmortem. Prince was cremated at the Geeta Colony crematorium late on Wednesday evening.

The police have arrested 17 persons including a cousin and maternal uncle of Prince, under charges of rioting and destruction of public property. Family members, however, alleged that they have been wrongfully confined as they were not involved. They claimed they were present near the body when the police arrived.

The police officers, meanwhile, claimed that the relatives and neighbours prevented the fire tender from dousing the fire and hence they were apprehended and have been sent to judicial for two days. Though the cousin was given bail later to carry out the last rites of Prince.

The driver and conductor of the killer Blueline are absconding. ‘‘We haven’t been able to search for the driver and conductor because our priority was to bring the situation under control,’’ said a police officer.

According to statistics, about 2,257 buses were prosecuted for various traffic offences in the first week of the drive alone. ‘‘More than 90% of these are Bluelines. They are prosecuted for various offences, mainly Supreme Court violations, including not driving in bus lanes, wrongful overtaking, stopping on places other than designated bus stops and using pressure horns,’’ said a senior traffic officer.

Holi aftermath: 11 die on city roads

Add comment March 6th, 2007

New Delhi: Eleven people died and five others were injured in road accidents in various parts of the city post-Holi celebrations on Monday and police suspect drunken driving to be the main culprit.

In the first case, three persons died and three others were injured as the Wagon-R car they were travelling in collided with a Tata 407 truck in Patel Nagar in west Delhi.

The deceased, identified as Suraj, Dinesh and Pradeep, died on the spot. They were all working as drivers in the Karol Bagh area. The injured are Bhup Singh, Kishan and Akash. According to the police, the accident took place around 4 am, near the traffic signal located close to the Patel Nagar police station. Suraj, who was driving the car, reportedly lost control over the car and hit into the mini truck from the rear.

‘‘We got a call from the police around 10 am about the accident. Suraj must have gone out for dinner with his friends — he generally stayed out and came home only once in 2-3 days. He was working in Karol Bagh,’’ said Sameer, the deceased’s brother.

A case of causing death by rash and negligent driving has been registered. The police are on the lookout for the driver of the truck. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the driver of the car was speeding. They are not ruling out the possibility of him having consumed alcohol. ‘‘We are waiting for his friends to recover so that they can be questioned,’’ said a police official. The bodies have been sent for postmortem.

In a separate accident, another Wagon-R car collided with a tempo near Sewa Nagar crossing in south Delhi, also in the early hours of Monday. The driver of the tempo died. He has been identified as Amit Mann (26).

A case of causing death by rash and negligent driving was registered at Lodhi Colony police station against Nikhil Kumar, driver of the car. He has been arrested.

According to the police, Nikhil — a resident of Gurgaon, was overspeeding. A medical examination is being carried out to ascertain whether he was under influence of alcohol. Two persons, Sumit and Satbir, were injured in the accident.

A 35-year-old man was killed in another accident reported from Sarita Vihar in south Delhi. The deceased, identified as Pankaj, was riding a motorcycle, which was hit by a speeding car. The driver of the car fled the scene and is yet to be identified.

Two other, Gagan and Ajay, died after falling off from their motorcycle after it hit the central verge in Badarpur in south Delhi.

Four others died in separate accidents. A two-year-old boy was hit by a Maruti in Mayapuri. In Shahdara, a 70-year-old was run over by an unidentified vehicle. Two more persons were killed in Delhi Cantt and Naraina.

Meanwhile, in separate incidents in Gurgaon, five persons were killed on Sunday. Of these, three were killed in separate road mishaps on NH-8. In one accident, a 25-year-old man, Deepak, died when a Wagon-R hit his motorcycle at Sultanpur Lake.
