Delhi/NCR: At least 10 people, including two minors and three policemen, were killed in separate incidents reported from the national capital region since Wednesday midnight. While seven persons, including three policemen, were killed on Noida-Greater Noida Expressway when a container ran over them, three persons, including two minors, sleeping on pavement were killed when a “drunk” accountant ran his car over them at Kesha-vpuram in northwest Delhi.
In the bizarre incident at Greater Noida, the container ran over 18 people, killing seven of them on the spot, around Wednesday midnight. Those who died were identified as head constable Krishna Kumar Tyagi and home guards Ashok Kumar and Sanjay. The other four were identified as Mukesh, Vakil, Pramod and Netram Singh.
The Noida police said a tractor, going from Greater Noida towards Noida, had turned turtle on the expressway near Sector 134 of Greater Noida as one of its wheels had come off. Police officials deployed rescue team to clear the expressway and a crane had also been summoned to take the vehicle to a safe bay.
The container, carrying vehicles of Honda automobile company, which was destined for Pune hit the crane, the tractor and also ran over people involved in rescue work. The injured were taken to Vinayak and Prakash hospitals in Noida. The condition of one of them reported to be critical.
The police has registered a case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving and has launched a hunt for driver and the helper who managed to escape from the spot.
At Keshavpuram, an accountant, allegedly in an inebriated state, ran over six persons sleeping on pavement around 1.15 am.
The police said Naveen, who was returning to his home after attending a wedding function in Gurgaon, could not negotiate a turn near Kanhaiya Nagar Metro station in Keshavpuram and ran over Chanderpal (50), his son Deepak (8), Lala Ram (46) and his sons Guddu (12), Jitender (9) and Harender (12) sleeping outside their hutment.
Alerted by the cries of the victims, area residents gathered there and rushed them to Mahavir hospital where Guddu and Deepak were declared brought dead. Chanderpal succumbed to his injuries on Thursday. The condition of Lala Ram was reported to be critical.
Naveen was allegedly trying to escape following the incident but was caught by the residents and handed over to the police. He has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

New Delhi: As half of the road accident victims are pedestrians, Delhi Police will launch a Safe Pedestrians Week from June 1 to create awareness among people and motorists to be responsible road users.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S.N. Srivastava said majority of the fatalities happen to pedestrians.
“There were 2,088 deaths due to road accidents in 2008 and the number of pedestrians among them was 1,075, which is 51.48 percent of the total fatalities. The picture is almost the same this year also as 781 persons died due to accidents up to May 15, and 398 of them were pedestrians,” Srivastava told reporters here.
As pedestrians are “soft targets” in road accident, it is all the more necessary to educate road users, stressing the safety of the pedestrians, he said.
“Traffic police in coordination with the local police will try to educate pedestrians and motorists that by observing the simple safety tips number of injuries and fatalities involving pedestrian can be reduced remarkably,” the officer added.
Srivastava said the most important safety tip to reduce pedestrian injuries and fatalities is to pay attention.

Delhi: If you thought you could park your sports utility vehicle (SUV) or luxury car anywhere and get away with it, beware! The traffic police will soon have 40 cranes that can tow away even “bigger cars” parked illegally in the Capital. HT had in September 2008 highlighted that the traffic police could not tow away illegally parked luxury cars and SUVs as they didn’t have bigger cranes.
Last Friday, the police finally floated a tender to hire 150 cranes, including 40 bigger ones, which can tow away vehicles up to 2.3 tonnes. “These cranes would be able to lift bigger vehicles without causing any damage,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S.N. Shrivastava said.
The remaining 110 cranes would be used to tow two-wheelers and smaller cars, a traffic police officer said. These big cranes would be at the disposal of the traffic police in the next three months, Shrivastava said.
The traffic police currently have 53 cranes at its disposal. To further streamline the system, the traffic police would also photograph spots from where the vehicles are be picked up.
Shrivastava said this would help in reducing the number of disputes that the traffic police have with vehicle owners. These photos would be used as a proof that the vehicle was towed from a ‘no parking zone’.

New Delhi: Eight students of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Rohini (Sector-8) were injured when a speeding Qualis rammed the Maruti van in which they were going to school on Tuesday.
Of the 10 students — mostly from sectors 24 and 25 in Rohini — travelling in the van, Ginni Dua (12) and Akshay Kumar (14) fractured their collar bones while Tamanna Kumar (14), Bhavika Mamtani (13), Rishav Dua (10), Akshay (12), Anjali (13) and Arzoo (13), and the van’s driver Ravi (21) received minor injuries. Shubham Khatri (10) and Rosy (7) escaped unhurt.
‘‘Ginni and Akshay have fractured their collar bones while others have received minor injuries on limbs, back and forehead. We have given them the necessary medical treatment and discharged them around 9.30 am,’’ said Dr Mukesh Yadav, chief medical officer of Dr BR Ambedkar hospital, where the students were admitted.
‘‘As soon as the van carrying 10 of us from Sector 25 took a turn towards Sector 24 at around 6.45 am, a speeding Qualis coming from Rithala rammed into it. Due to the impact, our van toppled twice and its CNG cylinder fitted in the rear side came off and hit a 35-year-old woman Bhagirathi,’’ said Bhavika, a student of Class IX. Bhavika’s brother Akshay also received minor injuries. A passerby Munna Lal came to the rescue of the kids. He stopped a school bus crossing the accident site and got these students and Bhagirathi admitted to Ambedkar hospital.
‘‘Both the van and Qualis, which belongs to a travel agency, have been kept at Budh Vihar police post under Sultanpuri police station. The driver of the Qualis fled the spot but he was arrested late on Tuesday evening,’’ said Manish Aggarwal, deputy commissioner of police (north west).
Though none of the kids were severely injured, worried parents are now hesitant to send their kids in private vans. ‘‘Travelling in these vans is risky but we don’t have any other option as the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) has no provision for school buses. Earlier, the school used to operate from a different school building in Sector 25. We used to drop the children as it was close to our homes. But last year they shifted operations to another building in Sector eight.
Therefore, we have to depend on vans now as the school doesn’t make travel arrangements for its students,’’ said Devender Dua, Ginni’s father.
Agrees Vina Dagar, aunt of Shubham: ‘‘Fortunately, Shubham jumped off the window of the van and escaped. But we cannot take this risk every day and school should take up the issue seriously and provide bus services for the kids.’’
The accident brings back the memories of an earlier mishap in which two KV students — Sachin and Sunny — died after a speeding Tata Sumo collided with their Maruti van in November last year. Both the brothers were students of KV, Lawrence Road.
Despite such incidents taking place in quick succession, KVS joint commissioner Pragya Srivastava said: ‘‘We are sympathetic to the injured kids and their families but it is a policy decision not to provide bus service. We are fully dependent on resources from the Centre and cannot afford to maintain a separate transport system for the purpose.’’
